About the programme

The AAL BAA (W911NF-24-S-0008, open 5 April 2024 – 4 April 2029) is a continuously open, competitive solicitation through which the U.S. Army Applications Laboratory invites white papers and full proposals from industry, academia, and government for disruptive technology R&D across three lines of effort: discovery, acceleration, and translation. Focus areas span autonomous platforms, AI/ML, sensing, communications, quantum technologies, contested logistics, and other capabilities aligned with AFC's seven Army modernisation priorities. Awards may take the form of contracts, grants, cooperative agreements, or Other Transactions for Research (OTs).

Why it matters

For defence-tech companies and deep-tech SMEs, the AAL BAA provides a low-barrier, rolling entry point into U.S. Army funding—submitting a white paper is the first step, meaning no lengthy full proposal upfront. The continuously open window and broad technology scope make it one of the most accessible DoD vehicles for early-stage companies with dual-use or defence-oriented innovations. Successful performers also benefit from direct Army evaluation and a clear pathway toward follow-on procurement contracts.
