About the programme
The NATO Innovation Fund is the world's first multi-sovereign venture capital fund, capitalised at EUR 1 billion by 24 NATO Allies and launched in 2022. It takes equity stakes in early-stage deep-tech and dual-use startups developing emerging and disruptive technologies critical to Allied defence, security, and resilience. It also invests in other venture capital funds to help build broader defence-technology ecosystems across the Alliance. As of mid-2026, it is the most active institutional backer in the European defence-tech startup segment, with portfolio companies spanning AI, robotics, quantum sensing, and autonomous systems.
Why it matters
For a defence-tech or dual-use startup, NIF is the single most concentrated source of sovereign-backed equity in Europe, appearing in the cap tables of approximately 12% of leading European defence startups. Beyond capital, NIF provides direct access to 24 NATO governments as potential customers and partners, with portfolio companies already winning pilot contracts and testing relationships with Allied defence agencies. Its close coordination with NATO DIANA (which offers non-dilutive accelerator grants) means founders can access a complementary funding and validation pathway across both instruments.
